The music short film for A Girl Like That was filmed on March 27, 2021, at Mel’s HonkyTonk and Grill, in Brownsville, TX. Production commenced at 8 PM and wrapped at 1 AM. A Girl Like That was filmed on my Sony PXW-FS7 Mark II cinema camera with SLR Magic APO HyperPrime Cine PL-mount prime lenses. I also used my Sony a6400 for a few quick gimbal shots. I served as director, cinematographer, editor, and colorist.
The “Girl Like That” was played by former Houston Texans Cheerleader Ashley Marie Campos. The short opening vignette was a fun little skit band frontman Roy Torres wanted to do with his daughter, Olivia. My go-to AD and HMUA Brenda Villarreal was on-hand to keep everything flowing smoothly and the talent looking pretty.
Family, friends, and select fans of Buck’n Crazy made up the extras, many of whom are veterans or members of law enforcement – so they all took direction very well and didn’t get rowdy! Mel’s had been closed for almost a year during the pandemic, so this was an opportunity for them to finally open up their doors again and serve patrons at the bar. It was a fun night and everyone seemed to have a good time.
After the first draft had been delivered, the band requested one change which was taken care of quickly. The video went live on May 9, 2021, and received very positive reactions from the Texas country music audience. The song is charting respectably well, and the music video has reached over 5,500 hits as of June 2021.
I made it a point this time, after the video for Heartbreak Song, to do more closeups of Jason Moreno and his sunglasses. He did, after-all, write the song.
